Importance:                            High

Dear Members,

Canegrowers Herbert River Manager Frank Scardamaglia and Director Steven Marbelli attended a meeting with the Canegrowers Farm Input Committee, Operations Senior Management, and Compliance Team Leaders from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and Police services in Mackay last week. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss load restraints for hauling cane. During the meeting, the committee was able to demonstrate to NHVR and Police a variety of combinations and variations that exist in the sugar industry in Queensland.

The field trip was highly beneficial for all parties involved. NHVR and Police gained a better understanding of the complexities involved in delivering cane to sidings and the associated challenges. Similarly, Canegrowers benefited from understanding what NHVR and Police consider high-risk areas and what they will be focusing on concerning compliance with load restraint regulations.

At this stage, Canegrowers and NHVR have agreed to work together to compile up-to-date guidelines for haul outs. Both parties, along with Police, reached an understanding that a little bit of trash is not considered a major concern or high-risk element. However, billets pose a different issue. Haul outs need to be especially diligent to prevent spillage on the roads. The two main points for haul outs to be aware of are billets coming off the load and billets resting on horizontal surfaces, which can fly off onto the road or hit another road user.

As mentioned, we will continue to work with NHVR to update the guidelines surrounding this matter. In the meantime, please ensure we endeavour to keep all cane off the road to avoid infringement notices.

WABCG Conference

Together with representatives from 20 other sugar producing countries, CANEGROWERS Chair and CEO attended the World Association of Beet and Cane Growers (WABCG) annual conference held in Fargo, USA.

The WABCG is just one of a number of international bodies where CANEGROWERS represents the interests of all Australian sugarcane growers.

These global relationships are incredibly important, enabling us to gather and share knowledge, while also building relationships that can assist us in positioning our Australian industry.

It is through this kind of work that we were able to partner with Brazil and Guatemala to bring forward the successful case against India at the World Trade Organization.

Market Update

The sugar price has been relatively stable over the past month. This is because the market is moving away from a deficit of sugar on the global market to a more neutral status. A weakening of the Brazilian Real has also made sugar production more attractive to Brazilian refineries, decreasing the deficit even further. Find out what else has been happening.
