Dear
Growers
In
week 6 of the 2023 season the mill reported that wet weather
impacts in week 6 made processing a bit frustrating with mud
solids and traffic scheduling. The mill took advantage of
interruptions and brought forward cleaning and maintenance tasks.
Victoria
mill crushed 133,527 tonnes for the week and Macknade crushed
33,965 tonnes for the week. The mill average ccs for week 6 was
12.68.
I
am receiving some reports of late bins around the district and
recording these. Just a reminder if you hear your group
experience late bins please either text, call or email me as I am
recording these to raise with the mill and validate the stops
account.

Sugarcane - One Plant many Products
|
|
CANEGROWERS,
together with fellow industry stakeholders SRA and New South
Wales milling company Sunshine Sugar, will have a stand within
the agricultural hall at this year’s Ekka.
Thousands of
people will get a little taste of life in the sugar industry
through an immersive virtual reality experience showing a
behind-the-scenes look at the production process from paddock to
packaging. The community will also have the chance to get up
close with real sugarcane, meet some pests that can affect the industry,
see the different products made from sugarcane including sugar
and bioproducts and learn about the supply stage stages from
paddock to packet.
This year, we
are part of the guided Ekka Excursion activity that provides
students with their own ‘passport booklet’ and encourages them to
journey around the grounds to collect stamps from each of the
eight learning trail points. The Ekka has created a Learning
Trail Teachers Guide to help teachers plan their Ekka Excursion.
It includes details about the stand and lists pre and post-Ekka
activities including links to teaching resources and videos. This
resource is purpose built for students in Prep to Grade 6, who
are attending our sensory experiences at the Ekka. Each Learning
Trail activity is aligned to Australian Curriculum with grade
accessibility information. You can access the EKKA Learning Trial
Teachers Guide here.
Come
visit the Sugarcane – One Plant Many Products stand at this
year’s Ekka, 12 – 20 August.

University of Wyoming visit
|
|

|
|
CANEGROWERS
hosted a group of 13 students from the University of Wyoming USA,
who were part of a study tour to Australia. The students visited
the CANEGROWERS Brisbane office and Rocky Point district, where
they toured Rocky Point, that makes bagged sugarcane mulch and
garden products.
The students met with Greg Zipf, the Chair of CANEGROWERS Rocky
Point and Josh Keith, Chief Operating Officer for the Rocky Point
factory. Greg explained the crop cycle and farming system used in
Rocky Point and outlined the importance of diversification in the
district.
Tom Foulke from
the University who accompanied the students said “CANEGROWERS is
a great opportunity to start the process of opening these young
people's minds to new ideas and new ways of doing things. The
fact that it comes so early in their Australian adventure means
this is the first opportunity for them to see something new.”
