Dear
Growers
In
the sixth week of the 2022 season, the loading had increased by
Thursday to 32,000 tonnes and full supply to the mill was
achieved. The mill reported that early morning cane supply
continues to be an issue and the mill will continue to run later
zero hours.
The mill also said that they are seeing the best rates at
Macknade for a number of years with good bin weights. The extra
40 tonnes per hour makes a big difference to the end of the
season. As of Thursday the Macknade mill had crushed 43,000
tonnes and is on track for a 70,000 tonnes for the week at a
CCS of 11.49. In regards to maintenance, Macknade mill
required a shredder stop on Thursday, this is earlier than normal
due to the high wear rates on this year’s crop. This high wear is
also being seen at Victoria.
The mill reported that the Victoria Mill has been running out of
cane each morning due to restricted cane supply, however by
Thursday the mill managed to get full loading. As of Thursday
Victoria has crushed 70,000 tonnes with the district mills on
track for a 200,000 tonnes week.
We have been informed by the mill that a
re-forecast of the 2022 Herbert crop will take affect over the
next week. The original Crop estimate of 4.4M with an
estimated finish date of 18th November will be raised to 4.7M
with an expected finish date of 15th December. Growers will
still have the right to alter their estimate or ask for Wilmar’s
assistance with estimates.

You
are invited to the field walk of the six easy steps validation
trial in the drier climate zone.
This
program is targeting well-drained soils in drier climatic
zones not previously targeted in the Herbert nutrient management
validation trials.
This
demonstration trial provides additional data specific to SIX EASY
STEPS in the Herbert region.
The field walk will allow growers to observe the demonstration
trial whilst discussing current results with SRA Principal
Agronomist Danielle Skocaj and Herbert region District Delivery
Officer Glen Park.

“Keep an eye out for rats”
|

at the recent HCPSL & Project Catalyst workshop.
Rat
numbers are on the increase across the Herbert cane growing
region. Growers are urged to monitor crops for rat infestations
over the next few months and take the necessary action to manage
this pest before significant crop damage occurs.
Lodged
and open crops, since the recent rains have allowed for weeds to
emerge within the crop and for rats to easily forage on laying
down cane stalks. Significant crop damage due to rats was
observed late last year and will continue again this season, due
to ideal conditions being experienced.
HCPSL
and Project Catalyst, recently conducted a workshop on “Rats,
Pigs and Soils”, where Travis Van Dooren from Travearth Drone
Services (mobile: 0423 638 628) showcased his drone mounted rat
bait dispensing device. The device can drop industry approved rat
baits from a drone precisely and accurately into large standing
and lodged crops of cane.
Growers
should consider rat baiting problematic blocks as a part of their
integrated rat management program before significant crop losses
occur this year.
For
more information about implementing an integrated rat management
program, please contact a HCPSL Extension Agronomist.

Farm safety includes fatigue
|
|
During
this Farm Safety Week, farmers are being urged to consider the
impact of fatigue as they work through labour
shortages, physically demanding tasks and challenging
environments. Farmsafe Australia says fatigue can impact stamina
and mental health and be a contributor to workplace injuries and
fatalities. It says simple strategies scheduling rest periods,
carrying water and snacks and speaking up to ask for help are
important along with realistically assessing the risk in each
particular situation to create a safer environment. For more
information on Farm Safety Week go to https://www.farmsafe.org.au/

Your July market update video is ready online
|
|
For
the first time in two years, speculators sold more than they
bought on the sugar market in May amid global financial market
uncertainty. A weak Aussie dollar offset the impact on the sugar
prices available for the next three seasons and they started to
return through June. Uprade your knowledge of the market and what
events might mean for your pricing decisions by watching the
monthly video summary and checking out the Weekly Notes published
each Monday on the CANEGROWERS Marketing Information Service
