Federal Budget review
|
CANEGROWERS met with other members of the
National Farmers' Federation late on Federal Budget night to
examine the announcements and allocations it included. Along with
immediate cost of living measures such as the reduction in the
fuel excise there was a theme of investment in and development of
regional business. This is welcomed as the sugarcane
industry works on a Roadmap for the future including diversification
and growth opportunities that will require new
investment. Read the NFF media release here https://nff.org.au/media-release/steady-budget-acknowledges-regional-potential/

United Nations reef mission hears grower
perspective
|
CANEGROWERS, along with the
Queensland Farmers' Federation, were the agricultural
representatives to meet with two UNESCO representatives as
part of the Monitoring Mission on the Great Barrier Reef. Their
mission was to discuss what is working well, and what is not,
with the Reef 2050 Plan and assess the reef's conservation
status. CANEGROWERS used the opportunity to highlight the
strong participation of growers in various Reef Rescue and Reef
Trust programs over the past 13 years, as well as the growing commitment
of growers to the Smartcane BMP program. It was also a chance to
raise the issues the sugarcane industry has with the unrealistic
farm management targets that have seen growers’ efforts unfairly
rated as poor in the Reef Report Cards. CANEGROWERS advocated for
an independent review of all aspects of the joint Government Plan
for Reef Water Quality, with the aims of designing programs that
empower growers and ensure the Plan is underpinned by robust
science and common sense.
