As you are aware the triennial election
nominations 2022-2025 for CANEGROWERS Herbert
River closed on the 25th of February. From the nomination
process we received enough nominations to form the CANEGROWERS
Herbert River board. Please join me in congratulating Chris
Bosworth, Sam Torrisi, Steve Marbelli, Paul Marbelli, Terry
Motti, Zenan Reinaudo, and our newest member to the board
Leah Russo, for their appointment commencing 1st May 2022.
The function of the CANEGROWERS Herbert River
organisation is crucial to growers, the CANEGROWERS organisation
and the industry. Directors have a vital role in representing the
members intersts and the sugar industry.

Nominations for the 2022 Bob Hawke Landcare Award
are now open! Nominate now using our awards portal HERE.
Inspired by the former Australian Prime
Minister, the Hon. Bob Hawke AC, the Bob Hawke Landcare Award is
our most prestigious, national award. Every two years, the award
publicly recognises an individual involved in championing the
national landcare movement through encouraging others to take
action on their own property or as part of their involvement in a
landcare group.
We’re
looking for outstanding leaders and innovators in landcare across
Australia who have demonstrated a commitment to natural resource
management and sustainable agriculture. If this sounds like you

Nominations for the award close Sunday 1
May with finalists to be announced in June. The Bob Hawke
Landcare Award winner will be announced at the 2022 National
Landcare Awards Gala Dinner in Sydney, on Wednesday, 24 August

Funding for cane loss monitor - Expressions of
interest - Closing 31 March 2022

CANEGROWERS
Herbert River have been successful in applying for a Agriculture
technology grant from AgiFutures Australia. The grants primary
goal is to increase the uptake of technology in the agriculture
sector in Australia.
CANEGROWERS
Herbert River have an opportunity to subsidise Cane Loss Monitors
for Harvesters in the Herbert River District.

Farm Input and Research Committee
|
|
Chairman
of Canegrowers Herbert River Michael Pisano who is also the chair
of this committee and manager Frank Scardamaglia attended a
meeting online with the Farm input and Research Committee.
The
committee discussed priorities including the increase of input
costs and possible solutions for these issues. Some other issues
discussed were transport, workforce shortages in the harvester
sector, and the business essentials course CANEGROWERS
are holding in March for members across all districts.

Environment Committee

Vice
Chair of Canegrowers Herbert River Chris Bosworth and manager
Frank Scardamaglia attended an Environment committee meeting in
Burdekin which included a field trip on the management of
groundwater in the Lower Burdekin. Some of the topics discussed included
the review of land management targets for Reef water quality, N
and P budgets and Smartcane BMP.

Wet Tropics Water Quality Science Forum
|
|
The forum presents an
opportunity to better understand the science behind the Wet
Tropics Waterway Health Report Card and what it means for water
quality and for growers. Meet the scientists and ask your
questions!

Dumping grant deadline extended
|
|
The
Queensland Government has extended the application date for a
grant program which assists farmers deal with illegally dumped
rubbish. Up to $500,000 is available to go towards removing
hazardous waste or dumped material that is difficult to access or
needs specialist equipment. Visit this government website

CANEGROWERS
has been raising the issue at a district level with some councils and
with a public plea in weekly newspapers for Queenslanders to stop
using farms as dump sites with the Chairman's column Please don't dump on
the food chain

Product Updates
Over
the past three weeks the local QSL team has hosted shed meetings
across the district to outline upcoming product improvements and
provide a market update. If you were unable to attend an
organised meeting and would like to have a chat to the local
team, please make contact.
Harvest Pool Opt
Out
Leave
the QSL Harvest Pool at any time during the season and price more
yourself using QSL's new Harvest Pool Opt Out. Just choose to
'Opt Out' and any of your Harvest Pool tonnage which has not
already been priced by QSL will be transferred to the
Self-Managed Harvest Contract so you can price it yourself.
Available to QSL Direct growers from 1 May 2022.

2022-Season
Pre-Crush Advance Payment
The
QSL Pre-Crush Advance Payment Scheme opened for nomination on 1
February 2022. The scheme gives growers a payment for their
2022-Season QSL GEI Sugar in March 2022 — before the crush
begins. Growers who have been accepted by QSL to participate in
the scheme (at QSL's discretion), will receive $50/tonne of sugar
IPS on 25 March for up to half of their 2022-Season QSL GEI
Sugar. Nominations close 11 March 2022 and can be made via your
QSL Direct account. Please note, a cost of $0.50/tonne IPS sugar
applies.
