Dear Growers
Into the sixth week of the 2021 Crushing season as more
harvesting is coming on line in the northern parts of Herbert
River. The mill has reported that they have nearly sorted the
traffic schedule back on track and on the correct cycle bringing
zero hours back to around 9am with daily loading close to 32,000
tonnes. This will assist with timely bin delivery to the
harvesting sector and address the late bin deliveries across the
district.
So far this week Macknade has
crushed 48,000 tonnes for the week and is looking at
approximately 68,000 tonnes for the week with a CCS of 12.30.
Victoria mills has crushed 85,000 tonnes for the week as of
Friday morning and looking at around 125,000 tonnes for the week
at a mill average of 12.5 CCS.
The mill has reported that both
sites have had several cane supply stops during the week with difficulties
transferring cane to Macknade mill which has stretched the loco
schedule. The mill has also reported they are receiving drags
each day and some harvesting groups have nominated for reduced
quota due to field conditions. The mill admits that late bin
delivery has also contributed to some of these drags.
The mill will undertake their
normal scheduled maintenance day for chemical clean and
maintenance on Tuesday for Victoria mill A side and Thursday for
Macknade mill.

CANEGROWERS Herbert River - New Appointment of
Director
|
|
As you may be aware, at our
CANEGROWERS Herbert River AGM in April 2021 we passed a
resolution ‘That until otherwise determined by members, the
number of directors shall be either seven or eight as resolved by
the board from time to time’.
CANEGROWERS Herbert River have
seven Directors on the board and we embraced the opportunity to
appoint an additional director who will hold this position until
the next election held in February 2022.
In June 2021, we called for
expressions of interest from members who want to make a
difference in the Sugar Industry and the Hebert River District.
After the Chairman and myself conducted interviews with the
applicants who expressed an interest, a recommendation was made
to the CGHR board.
We would also like to thank our
members who expressed an interest in this position and we
acknowledge that the level of applicants’ interviews were of a
very high standard and made our choice quite difficult.
Please join the CANEGROWERS
Herbert River board and myself in congratulating Zenan Reinaudo
to her appointment as Director of CGHR.

National Class 1 Agricultural Vehicle and
Combination Mass and Dimension Notice 2021
|
|
QLD Class 1 Agriculture Vehicle Notices revoked and
replaced with National Class 1 Agricultural Vehicle and
Combination Mass and Dimension Notice 2021.
The following agricultural notices apply to the
sugar industry and are due to be revoked by 2 August 2021.
- Queensland Class
1 Agricultural Vehicle (Coastal Zone 1) Dimension Exemption
Notice 2016
- Queensland Class
1 Agricultural Vehicle (Northern Coastal Zone 1) Dimension
Exemption Notice 2016
- Queensland Heavy
Vehicle Class 1 Agricultural Vehicle (Bundaberg Region 5.0m
wide)
CANEGROWERS delayed the revocation to ensure that
the National
Class 1 Agricultural Vehicle and Combination Mass and Dimension
Notice 2021 (No.1) included what was required in
terms of signage and pilots. If you have a current permit which
refers to one of the above revoked notices, then you need to
apply for a new permit. There should not be many of these permits
as NHVR have only been issuing one year permits and these permits
would have been referencing the national Class 1 Ag Notice (which
is the current notice) .
If you would like any clarity on this please contact
Frank Scardamaglia on 0475 818 800 to discuss.

Growers Liability for Acts of Contractors
|
|
The general rule in law is that a grower is not
liable for the acts of an independent contractor. The bad news is
that there are always exceptions to the general rule. One
exception is that a grower may well still be liable if they
exercise a substantial degree of control over how the contractor
performs their services.

Powerline safety alert
|
|
CANEGROWERS has been informed of six serious
incidents involving sugarcane harvesters and haulouts and live
powerlines since the 2021 season began. Last year, Workplace
Health and Safety Queensland recorded ten incidents for the whole
season.
This year's incidents have been in the Burdekin,
Mackay/Proserpine, Bundaberg and Cairns regions. There is concern
that an influx of workers new to the industry and with limited
harvesting and farming experience is a factor.
Growers and contractors employing workers are urged
to raise awareness and use strategies to manage the risk of
further accidents including using the Look up and Live mobile app
for powerline information and Ergon windscreen stickers to
record vehicle heights.
These and other resources are available here

Reef regs update
|
|
Working for you, CANEGROWERS has met with staff of
the Dept of Environment and Science to again outline concerns and
seek clarification about the new regulations, which take effect
on 1 December 2021. In addition to existing regulations
(which include soil testing, following N and P recommendations as
per SIX EASY STEPS, record keeping and maps) growers will
need to:
- Show management
zones on map (only if such zones have been defined)
- Identify soil
constraints (only if such constraints are present)
- Before starting
fertiliser applications for the calendar year, total up the
amounts of N and P recommended for all cane blocks on the
farm
- Have an
'appropriate person' verify the above documentation (e.g.
the person who provided the nutrient recommendations based
on the soil tests)
- After fertiliser
applications, total up the amounts of N and P applied to all
cane blocks on the farm
- Have a record of
the total amounts of N and P applied the previous
year, and
- Have a record of
average crop yield from the previous year.
CANEGROWERS remains concerned that these new
regulations risk undermining SIX EASY STEPS and Smartcane
BMP. CANEGROWERS is opposed to the requirement for growers’
nutrient documentation to be developed and verified by an ‘appropriate
person'. This is unnecessary, costly, and condescending.

QSL Update
|
|

|
|
Grower Floor Price Contract: The 2022-Season Grower Floor Price Contract (GFPC)
came close to the fill level of $450/tonne gross actual during
the recent market spike. The GFPC enables growers to lock in a
known return, while also receiving 50 cents in the dollar for any
subsequent market moves above their achieved GFPC target. Orders
can be placed for as little as 10 tonnes, up to three seasons in
advance.
Click here for more information about the Grower
Floor Price Contract
Additional tonnage now available: As of 1 July 2021, QSL growers can access
additional GEI tonnage to price in the 2023 and 2024 Seasons,
with committed pricing levels now as follows:

To access QSL pricing, you must first have a GEI
Sugar Marketing nomination in place for the season in question.
See your local QSL team for details or help with the nomination
process.
Final 2020-Season Advance payment: The final QSL Advance payment for the 2020 Season
will be made this week. This payment will be made as a separate
transaction in addition to any 2021-Season Advance payments
growers may receive that same week. The final 2020-Season payment
represents a 2% increase on the June 2021 payment. The current
2021-Season Advance rate is 65%.
Click here to see the full 2021-Season Indicative
Advances Program.
New GST arrangements (Wilmar districts only): QSL's new simplified GST arrangements for our
growers in Wilmar milling districts are now in place. As
part of this change, these growers are now also receiving
improved statements incorporating a Tax Summary section
highlighting the key QSL figures for their bookwork. For a
