Understanding Enhanced Efficiency Fertilisers to
Optimise On-Farm Decisions
|
|
|
|
A new collaborative project will provide Australian
sugarcane growers with valuable information on the potential for
enhanced efficiency fertilisers (EEFs) to be incorporated within
their farming systems.
This project will build on four years of work conducted as part of
EEF60, which will finish in June. Through EEF60, industry partners
worked together to conduct trials of EEFs on 60 sites in regions
between Childers and Mossman.
The project discovered valuable information about the practical
application of EEFs including considerations such as weather and
farming scenarios, the economic implications of their use, and how
this relatively new fertiliser technology compares to more traditional
fertiliser.

Carbon Accounting Workshops
|
|
|
|
The Landcare Farming Program is funding a series of
workshops across Australia to support farmers in establishing
natural capital accounts and carbon footprint benchmarks. A total
of 25 workshops will be held throughout Australia from February to
September 2021.
These workshops will be tailored to specific agricultural
industries. This will be an exciting opportunity to develop a
carbon account for your farm, and investigate further emissions
reduction and sequestration potential.
Benefits to farm businesses from reducing emissions may include
reduced farm costs through improved efficiency and productivity and
increased market opportunities as the demand for more sustainably
farmed food and fibre rises.
If you are interested please provide your name, email, phone
number, postcode and nearest town to jane.dunn@integrityag.net.au.

Improving Workplace Health and Safety in the Cane
Industry
|
|
|
|
There’s no disputing that farming has plenty of
risks when it comes to workplace health and safety (WHS). Heavy
machinery, long hours, early starts, late finishes, and tight
deadlines – they are all part of the risk that our industry manages
every day.
SRA recently partnered with James Cook University (JCU) on a
project that examined a range of WHS issues in the industry and
subsequently made a number of recommendations for improvement and
refinement.
As part of the project, Jemma King and Richard Franklin from JCU
looked at the Smartcane BMP resources on workplace health and
safety, the resources available for improving WHS, and the barriers
and enablers to improve WHS.

Reef Issues Top This
Week's Agenda
|
|
|
|
Over the past week, grower concerns around
government programs and attitudes to farming in Great Barrier Reef
catchments have been headlined by CANEGROWERS.
Discussions were held with the Great Barrier Reef
Foundation which provided an update on the roll-out of
state-wide projects. CANEGROWERS reps took the opportunity to raise
sugarcane industry concerns around a range of issues including
the water quality targets, Paddock to Reef reporting regime
and Report cards, concerns with the Reef credits schemes and
CANEGROWERS strategy for ensuring these issues are resolved nd there
are acceptable arrangements for evaluation of farm impacts on water
quality.
CANEGROWERS has also met with staff of the
Queensland Government's Office of the Great Barrier Reef to outline
the unintended consequences from its planned roll-out of
regulations requiring N and P budgets. This included explaining
cases where growers have implemented ‘expert’ advice to deviate
significantly from the block-level recommendations of 6ES with no
apparent agronomic basis. The frequency of such cases, with
over-fertilisation of some crop classes (e.g. plant crops) and
under-fertilisation of others (e.g. 3rd and 4th ratoons), may
increase.
